The Video Team Management System: project-management software I built for the video team I ran in Tokyo. My pivot from video to software.

software

VTMS, the Video Team Management System, was the project-management software I built for the video team I ran in Tokyo, at a language-learning company. We'd looked at the existing tools. They all took a lot of manual upkeep, didn't fit how a video team works, and cost money.

So I built my own. You define a template once for each video series: shoot, edit, rough assembly, motion graphics, color grading, then approval from the video team and from whoever is responsible for each language. Every step has a default owner. Finishing one task unlocks the next, and each person only looks at their own list, ranked by publish date. When work is ready to hand off, it shows up on the next person's list.

It was my first web application, and it took about a year. It started in FileMaker, moved to PHP, MySQL and JavaScript, and was later ported to AngularJS. The video team still uses it.

This marks my pivot from video production to software. In 2016 I moved from running video to product management, which is still my day job.
